About Everywhere Then
Everywhere Then is a way to start anywhere in history (a year, a date, a person, a place) and see what else was happening around the world at that same moment.
This is a pilot. It covers one decade, the 1910s, in depth: 3,959 events from 1912 to 1919, each with its date, place, a short summary written in our own words, and links to the pages it was checked against. The years were the most crowded of the century: the last years of several empires, a world war, revolutions in China, Mexico and Russia, and a pandemic, but also films, football clubs, poems and scientific papers.
What is here
- A page for each year, with every event month by month and region by region.
- Pages on World War I away from the Western Front: the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the United States and Canada.
- Two moments in detail: 28 June 1914, the day of the Sarajevo shots, and April 1912, when the Titanic sank.
- The card feed on the home page, which lets you widen the window from one day out to the Big Bang. It needs JavaScript and is a prototype.
How it is made
Events are chosen by how widely known they are today, with a share kept for places outside Europe and North America. Each one is drafted with the help of AI from sources we opened, then checked by a separate checker that did not write it, and every year is audited at random by a reviewer that built nothing. The full method is on the sources and checking page.
Summaries drafted with AI and reviewed by an editor.
